Many organizations use Java for different kinds of applications and development scenarios. They often are under the impression that Java software can be deployed “for free” at all times. However, some Java software licenses have been made commercially available.

Oracle has made the following Java software licenses commercially available:

  • Java SE Advanced Desktop
  • Java SE Advanced
  • Java SE Suite

As with almost any Oracle license, the above listed Java software licenses actually represent a bundle or suite of products/components which an end-user is entitled to make use of, if such a Java software license has been obtained.

  • Java SE Advanced Desktop includes the right to make use of Java Standard Edition, Java Mission Control and Java Flight Recorder for Desktop use, Auto Update Off, Usage Tracker. In addition, the license also contains a restricted use license of Oracle’s WebLogic Server Standard Edition. Oracle WebLogic Server Standard Edition may however only be used for running the Java Advanced Management Console 2.0 and later versions.
  • Java SE Advanced includes the right to make use of Java Standard Edition and JRockit Mission Control. In addition, the license also contains
    • a restricted use license of Oracle’s WebLogic Server Standard Edition. Oracle WebLogic Server Standard Edition may however only be used for running the Java Advanced Management Console 2.0 and later versions
    • a restricted use license of Oracle’s Coherence Standard Edition One. Oracle Coherence Standard Edition One may however only be used in configurations that do not configure Hot Standby, cache overflow, or off-heap (NIO) storage.
  • Java SE Suite includes the right to make use of Java SE Advanced and JRockit Real Time.

End users should be aware of the fact that Oracle is not providing download and/or installation programs that correspond directly to Java SE, Oracle Java SE Advanced, Oracle Java SE Advanced Desktop and Oracle Java SE Suite. Depending on the Java software programs licensed, one or more of the following individual packages must be downloaded:

  • JRE (Server or regular packages)
  • JDK
  • Java Advanced Management Console
  • Microsoft Windows Installer (MSI) Enterprise JRE Installer
  • JavaFX Runtime
  • JRockit JDK
  • JRockit Mission Control
  • Java for Business JRE
  • Java for Business JDK

It is clear that end-user organizations should be aware of which specific Java software programs are required to be licensed separately vs what Java software programs can be used free of charge and in what circumstances this applies. If you are in need of extra expertise and a structured approach in this field, feel free to contact B-lay.
